By: Janelle Schenk, LLMSW; Maria Jones, PhD; Rachel Piper, LLMSW; Suzi Naguib, PsyD
Conversations with young kids regarding racism can feel difficult to have. It seems hard to know when it’s appropriate to start having these conversations, if we should be addressing the violence we see on the news, and how we can teach our children to be anti-racist. The truth is, we can start having these conversations with our kids when they are quite young. In fact, we should start having these conversations, as kids are experiencing racial inequality and bias at their young age.
At Sunfield Center we strive to be a part of the solution, because there is clearly a problem with racial inequality and the treatment of black people throughout our country. This blog is a compiled list of resources for parents outlining tips on how to talk to kids about a variety of topics related to race and racism. There are some quick reads for the busy parent, and some longer suggested reading lists for those wishing to dive deeper into the topic.
