Our Story

Sunfield Center was opened in August 2011 by a group of passionate psychologists from the former University of Michigan Autism and Communication Disorders Center (UMACC). With UMACC closing its doors that fall, we hoped to fill that gap by creating a new center in Ann Arbor. We named our new home Sunfield Center: sun, to reflect the warmth, courage, and ambition we hope to instill in our patients and their families, and field as a symbol of openness, growth and a new journey.

There’s no better way to describe Sunfield Center than bright. Not just because of our bright, sunny office in Ann Arbor, but because of the positivity, passion and dedication to scientific knowledge that our staff brings to Sunfield Center every day. Every member of our Sunfield team, including our clinicians, administrative staff, and dedicated student volunteers, is committed to providing the best service and care for our patients and families. One of the many little ways we do this is through our “no shoes” policy, to make sure Sunfield stays clean and welcoming for our patients and families. You might notice the sign by the door on your way in; since Sunfield opened, everyone who walks inside, including our clinicians, has been walking and interacting with our socks on just like we do at home!

At Sunfield Center, we are well-recognized for our high-quality care, dedication and commitment to the patients and families that we see. We’re proud of our history and how our story has been shaped by all of the people and institutions we’ve had the pleasure of working with. This journey has been both humbling and fulfilling, and as long as our name continues to be Sunfield Center, we’ll continue to grow alongside the community we’ve built.
