The Movers & Shakers treatment program developed at Sunfield Center, is designed to help adults diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) learn about healthy lifestyle habits and to incorporate exercise into their daily lives. With the support of Sunfield Center staff and student volunteers from the University of Michigan’s School of Kinesiology, group members specifically learn about the benefits of physical activity and practice a number of adapted exercises at Sunfield Center and at a local gym in Ann Arbor. For example, group members are exposed to resistance training using thera-bands, flexibility exercises aimed at warming up and stretching the muscles of the body, and cardiovascular activities. The goal of this program is to promote generalization of social skills within the community by practicing applicable skills within the context of this adapted physical activity program (for e.g., asking for assistance, understanding gym rules and etiquette, greeting, engaging and developing relationships with gym staff and student members while developing a healthier lifestyle by engaging in physical activity).
Our summer Movers and Shakers group will meet on Tuesdays at 6:30pm. For more information about this program, and to enquire about participating please call us at (734) 222-9277.
