Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) include Autistic Disorder, Asperger’s Disorder, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified. These disorders are estimated to affect as many as 1 in every 88 individuals. ASD is characterized by atypical development in communication and social interaction, as well as the emergence of unusually restricted and repetitive behaviors and interests. Even though ASD is neurologically based and lifelong in duration, research has shown that early identification and intervention provides an important foundation for learning and building social relationships, and is critical to later school success.
